24 WEEKS PREGNANT

Pregnancy photo #6, August 18th, 24 weeks and 1 day.

What an exciting month this has been…and so full of changes. I continue to feel awesome most of the time. I do have heartburn on a daily basis and more recently have begun to experience lower back pain. It’s very difficult to get comfortable at night because my back is so sore and I am finding that my right leg “gives out” on me sometimes when I am walking. I still experience some insomnia, mostly as a result of my back being sore and my very frequent trips to the restroom. My stomach is getting REALLY BIG! You can definitely tell that I am pregnant and not just gaining weight. My appetite is normal and while I am not necessarily having any "cravings", I am eating a lot of Oreos and milk. I've consumed more Oreos in the past 2 months than I have in my entire life combined. They are the one food that always sounds good to me!

Samuel is moving a lot now! He gets really excited and active after I have eaten and likes to move mostly late at night or in the middle of the night. On August 4th, I was lying in bed with my hand on my stomach and felt him kick. It was so incredible. Jimmie got to feel him move for the first on August 7th. He thought that was amazing. You should have seen his face, it was all dimples! He felt him move again the other night and said that he could tell Samuel was getting much stronger.

Not only is Samuel getting more active, but he’s starting to be stubborn! We had our fourth doctor's appointment on August 9th with Dr. Crawford. He diagnosed Samuel with “fetal arrhythmia” and scheduled us for a fetal echocardiogram. He would hear the heartbeat very strongly and then would hear nothing for a few seconds then the heartbeat would pick back up. As you can imagine, Jimmie and I were devastated and incredibly worried. When I was checking out at the office and scheduling the echocardiogram, the receptionist asked, “What’s wrong with your baby?” Well, that was all it took…the flood gates opened and I couldn’t hold back the tears. It was a rough afternoon for Jimmie and I both. Aside from that, the check-up went well. My urinalysis was normal and I had only gained 2 pounds since my last visit, for a grand total of 8 the entire pregnancy.

The fetal echocardiogram and another ultrasound were performed on August 11th. My mom and grandmother accompanied Jimmie and I to this visit. Much to our delight, it was determined that Samuel’s heart is perfectly healthy. Praise God! The physician that performed the echocardiogram (Dr. Brady) informed us that this is quite common with a fetus of his age and is almost always an isolated event that causes no problems. This ultrasound was incredible. They examined and measured every organ and bone in Samuel’s body. He’s getting so big! He weighs approximately 1 pound, 4 ounces. His waist is approximately 18 cm around and his heart is approximately 1 inch wide. His foot is 4 cm long! Speaking of feet, he is VERY proud of his. He kept kicking his tiny legs through the entire ultrasound and getting his feet in a lot of the pictures. He also spent the first part of the ultrasound with his arm over his face as if we were seriously inconveniencing him! He's showing that stubborn, Griffin attitude already. We got 11 new ultrasound pictures. Here are a few of our favorites…

At the Eagle Creek Country Club Annual Meeting, Jimmie and I remembered that this very same time last year was right after we decided to have a baby. Little did we know, that at this event this year, I would be 6 months pregnant. What a difference a year makes!
